Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about our dogs, our process, and what to expect when getting a puppy from Hickory Hill.

Can I pick my own puppy? +
We don't place puppies based on looks or personal color preference. By the time puppies are 5–7 weeks old, we know their personalities well enough to make thoughtful matches. We will present you with your best options, and if more than one fits your home, you'll have a choice. This approach leads to happier dogs and happier families.
Do you ship puppies? +
We strongly prefer in-person pickup here in Tennessee. We may be able to arrange a meeting point depending on distance. We rarely use cargo shipping. If you're located out of state, let's talk — we'll do our best to work something out that is safe and comfortable for the puppy.
I don't live on a farm — can I still get a puppy? +
Absolutely. English Shepherds can thrive in active suburban homes as well as on country properties. The key is having an engaged, active home — these are not couch potato dogs. If you have an active lifestyle, enjoy outdoor activities, or plan to do dog sports or training, an English Shepherd may be a wonderful fit.
How often do you have litters? +
We have a limited number of litters each year — typically one per year. This allows us to give each litter the full attention and care it deserves. We'd rather do fewer litters exceptionally well than many litters quickly.
What do puppies go home with? +
Each puppy leaves with a puppy packet covering their socialization history, health records, feeding instructions, and what to expect in the first weeks. They'll also have a blanket with familiar scents to ease the transition. We provide registration paperwork and are available for ongoing support after your puppy goes home.
Do you hold breeding rights? +
We do not restrict breeding rights. However, we do ask that you let us know upfront if you're considering breeding in the future. This helps us make the best match from a conformation and pedigree standpoint. We love to stay connected with families who breed from our lines and are happy to offer guidance.
Is the English Shepherd the right dog for me? +
